In only 4 years, Lancaster Friends School has had a big impact! It is a small school with a big mission - a more peaceful and just world. Education is the way to lasting peace, and LFS works toward the mission every day in big and little ways. Teaching true history, seeking truth, raising up marginalized voices, and creating a community of belonging are all important aspects of the educational community at LFS.
At Lancaster Friends School, social justice and advocacy are not abstract concepts, they are lived experiences woven into every aspect of our curriculum and community life. Rooted in Quaker values of equality, integrity, and peace, our students learn to see themselves as active participants in shaping a more just world. Through classroom study, service learning, and direct engagement, they explore how advocacy and civic responsibility can create real change. A highlight of this work is our middle school advocacy trip to Washington, D.C., where students spend five days learning about the democratic process, meeting with lawmakers, and participating in advocacy workshops. Before the trip, they research and discuss issues that matter most to them, ultimately choosing a cause to bring to their representatives. On their most recent trip, students chose to lobby for trans rights and were honored to participate in the Trans Day of Visibility, deepening their understanding of allyship and the power of youth voices in public discourse.
Beyond the classroom, Lancaster Friends School’s commitment to justice and inclusion continues to grow. We have developed a Youth Advocacy Workshop for GSAs, a free, conference-style event that empowers LGBTQIA+ youth and allies through keynotes and breakout sessions. Our students are visible participants in Lancaster and Lititz Pride celebrations, as well as community events such as MusicFest, Open Streets Lancaster, and the Unity Cup, where they help foster inclusivity and connection. Guided by our mission, we nurture students to be courageous, compassionate leaders who honor the inherent worth and dignity of all people. Through advocacy, service, and education, our students are not only learning about justice, they are actively helping to build it.
