My story with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center:
When and why did you start volunteering at Raven Ridge?
I started volunteering in October of 2023 and have now transitioned to a new role on staff as the Education Coordinator! I had worked with wildlife at other jobs and was seeking out opportunities to work with them again.
What is your favorite part about volunteering at Raven Ridge?
My favorite part of volunteering was being able to see our incredible local wildlife up close. You never knew what would be at the center when you arrived, and each day was an exciting new adventure. I have had the chance not only to see but also to learn about many different kinds of animals that most people don't get to see during their lives. A highlight was when a Short-eared Owl came in, because they are very rare in Pennsylvania!
What are your favorite species to work with at the center?
I love working with all of the different birds of prey, like hawks, eagles, and owls. These animals are amazing predators, and seeing them up close is fascinating!
What have you learned about wildlife since starting at Raven Ridge?
Something I did not fully grasp until I volunteered was just how much our decisions as human beings can impact wildlife. Most of the reasons that animals end up in rehab are directly caused by humans, but so much of it is entirely unintentional! From getting hit by cars, finding themselves in the wrong place, or even getting a Wendy's Frosty cup stuck to their head! Our actions have an immense impact on local wildlife, and if you take the time to educate yourself, you can make a huge difference in the lives of wildlife.
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your experience?
Something that I think sets Raven Ridge apart from other wildlife centers is the focus on working with the public, not just the animals. Whether that is over the phone, in person when someone drops off an animal in distress, or at an educational event. Every staff member and volunteer takes the time to listen, educate, and ensure that the person we come into contact with feels they have had a positive experience. Protecting wildlife is more than just taking care of animals; it's about equipping the public with the knowledge, confidence, and desire to protect them as well.
