My story with Raven Ridge Wildlife Center:
Why did you start Raven Ridge?
My journey into wildlife rehabilitation began after witnessing the devastation caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion in 2010. I sought ways to help but was turned away because only licensed wildlife rehabilitators were allowed to assist. Later that week, I witnessed a Snow Goose being struck by a car but was unable to find a rehabilitator to take the bird to for three days. These experiences motivated me to pursue a career in wildlife rehabilitation.
How has Raven Ridge changed over the last 10 years?
While working a full-time job, I began volunteering at wildlife centers, taking relevant classes, and apprenticing under licensed professionals. Raven Ridge officially became a nonprofit in May 2015. I continued my full-time job outside the center until the demand for care became too great, prompting me to transition to full-time work at Raven Ridge in 2021.
What do your volunteers mean to you?
The volunteers at Raven Ridge are the heart and soul of our mission! Our team genuinely values their dedication and the countless hours they invest in our center, playing a pivotal role in the rescue and rehabilitation of injured, orphaned, or abandoned wildlife. These volunteers are the backbone of Raven Ridge, fully aware that the level of care they provide is directly linked to the quality of life for the animals in our charge. I am profoundly grateful to work alongside such an extraordinary team of friends and colleagues, all of whom are united by a passionate commitment to our cause: giving wildlife a second chance at life.
