As middle & high school graduates of the Leaders of Future Generations (LFG) after-school program, our Mentors have embraced new opportunities to effect positive change across Lancaster. One opportunity is through pouring into their 5th & 6th grade peers - namely, through modeling leadership in after-school cohorts as well as LFG's summertime overnight Kids Kamp. Mentors also creatively promote healthy alternatives to youth substance use, such as through partnering with the DUI Council of Lancaster to design an annual anti-underage drinking billboard. This year also marks the beginning of high school Mentors' very own Youth Advisory Board, where they are eagerly bringing their peer-focused addiction prevention efforts to life!
The LFG program - including the after-school cohorts in three districts, Mentor team, and Kids Kamp - is 100% funded by donations. The best part is, participation for all students is completely free!
Below is a glimpse into how the Mentor program has impacted current participants:
- "Having the opportunity to lead [after-school] cohorts has challenged me in great ways, encouraging me to grow in my confidence, communication skills, and empathy." - Siyana, 9th grade
- "During my time in the mentor program, I have become more confident in taking healthy risks as well as improved my problem solving skills in tough situations." - Raelynn, 10th grade
- "When I first joined the program I was a very shy person that stayed to myself, but after being in the program I saw growth in myself when I started to talk to people I never would have before." - Damien, 9th grade
- "The mentor program has shown me that leadership is not just taking charge, but also showing empathy and noticing people individually to help lead them the best you can." - Miranda, 8th grade
- "For everyone and anyone who wants to grow in positive leadership, understand that it’s not a linear path; there are going to be days where it feels like you’re not growing but as long as you work with intention and take as many opportunities as you can to be hands on, over time you will see the growth even if it’s not exponential right off the bat." - Molly, 12th grade
Thank you for emboldening our growing team of student leaders with your support!
