HISTORY WORTH PRESERVING

The Strasburg Heritage Society was founded in 1972 by a small group of civic-minded residents with the mission of:

The PRESERVATION of historic buildings, artifacts and documents;

The EDUCATION of local residents to the advantages and wisdom of preserving elements of the past;

The RESTORATION of historic buildings; and

The development of a deeper APPRECIATION of the area's rich cultural inheritance.

The Society hosts monthly seminars on various historical topics as well as an annual Holiday Home Tour and a bi-annual Garden Tour. Twice a year we publish a journal focused on local history which is distributed free of charge to the residents in the surrounding zip code. The Society continues it's restoration of three historic properties in town, including the 1793 Shroy House which when reopened will serve as a museum and cultural center.

For the last 50 years, the Society has served as the repository for the town's history, making it available to the public, and ensuring its preservation for future generations. In this anniversary year, we focus not just on the history of Strasburg, but we celebrate the history of the Society itself. We celebrate the community events, the tours, the restorations, the growing collection of artifacts and the pride for the history of our town as passed down from generations to generations of those who call Strasburg home...but most of all, we celebrate the countless members that worked tirelessly to carry on that original mission and who built the Society into what it is today.

To all of those members, and to our broader community of supporters, both past and present, we offer a heartfelt thank you!

Who We Are

The Strasburg Heritage Society was formed in 1972 by a small group of civic-minded residents with the mission of:

The PRESERVATION of historic buildings, artifacts and documents;
The EDUCATION of local residents to the advantages and wisdom of preserving elements of the past;
The RESTORATION of historic buildings; and
The development of a deeper APPRECIATION of the area's rich cultural inheritance.

The Society hosts monthly seminars on various historical topics, workshops focusing on traditional trades and crafts, and a yearly historic home tour and bi annual garden tour. The Society is currently restoring three historic properties in town.

For the last 46 years the Society has served as repository for the town's history, making it available to the public and ensuring its preservation for future generations.

In anticipation of our 50th anniversary in 2022, the Society is working to complete the restoration of the 1793 Shroy House to be reopened as a museum and cultural center.

Giving Activity

Mission

The Strasburg Heritage Society was formed in 1972 to preserve, collect, and interpret the rich history of the town. To accomplish these goals the society has done the following:

1. Our archives contains postcards, pictures, furniture, artifacts, documents and other historic items of Strasburg.

2. The society owns three adjoining historic buildings on South Decatur Street, two blocks south of the square:

The Shroy House is one of the earliest brick houses in town and was built around 1803. It was the home of John Shroy, the poet. The society hopes to restore it as a museum.

The Glass house is a Victorian house built about 1878. Presently it is a rental property providing income for the society.

The 1806 Methodist Church is one of the oldest Methodist churches in Pennsylvania. It is now a rental property, but hopefully it will be restored.

3. Monthly lectures on local history are presented from September through May on the third Monday of each month. The lectures are held at the First Presbyterian Church, located two blocks south of the square.
