The Edible Classroom

A nonprofit organization

Our Mission:

The Edible Classroom cultivates academic achievement, healthy lifestyles, and environmental stewardship through garden-based, experiential learning.

What We do:

  • Partner with schools in Lancaster County to establish and maintain vegetable gardens on school grounds
  • Develop a customized garden program for each of our partner schools, that allows teachers, administration, staff, and the community to work together on a common goal supporting our children’s education.
  • Students participate in hands-on learning outside in their school garden during their regular school day.
  • Our lessons are aligned with PA State Standards, reinforcing and supporting classroom learning.
  • Students are involved in the entire seed to table process. They build raised beds, plant, tend, harvest, compost and cook during lessons!
  • We offer summer camps in the school gardens within the school districts we serve.
  • Partner with local businesses and organizations to provide meaningful volunteer and corporate sponsorships opportunities

Our Values:

  • We value children and their families... and seek to inspire their healthy eating habits through creative, engaging, and informative garden-based programs.
  • We value our schools and educators... and we commit to serving them by providing programs that complement the PA Department of Education’s standards.
  • We value this earth... and incorporate environmentally friendly activities and practices
