Liberty Warbird Association exists to honor Vietnam Veterans and to educate the public about the war in Vietnam and the continuing impact that war has on our veterans.
In October 2024, three Boyertown Area Senior High School Students visited our hangar in Lititz to film and produce a video about our organization. Their commitment to learn and educate others about the experience of Vietnam veterans and honor those veterans through this tremendous effort is a perfect example of our mission. The one thing that almost all Vietnam veterans experienced in-country was the iconic and ubiquitous Huey helicopter. They were used everywhere and for everything: they brought the troops into battle, resupplied them with ammo, water, C-rations–whatever was needed. They took out the wounded to get them to lifesaving care in moments. They took their dead off the battlefield. The unique whop whop whop of its massive blades signaled that help was coming. Every Vietnam vet knows that sound and can hear a Huey coming from miles away.
We have restored a UH-1H Huey to flying condition and we use it to help our Vietnam veterans tell their stories. We know that sharing stories and emotions that have been buried for decades helps heal trauma. Huey 823 says loudly and clearly: Welcome Home.

The Liberty War Bird Association’s mission is to honor those who served in the Vietnam War by maintaining and operating Huey 823 to educate the public about the pivotal role of the UH-1 “Huey” helicopter in the Vietnam War, thus allowing people to experience its significance.
