The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum preserves, shares, and celebrates the rich history of the healing arts, with a special focus on Lancaster County and the people whose compassion, innovation, and dedication have shaped healthcare in our community.

Home to a collection of more than 11,000 artifacts, the museum explores the evolution of medicine through engaging exhibits, educational programs, community events, and hands-on learning experiences. From early apothecaries and country doctors to groundbreaking medical discoveries and modern healthcare, we connect visitors with the stories behind the science and the people behind the progress.

As a nonprofit organization, we are committed to making medical history accessible to everyone. Through exhibitions, research, preservation, and partnerships with local healthcare organizations, schools, and historians, we inspire curiosity, foster lifelong learning, and ensure that Lancaster County's remarkable medical heritage continues to educate and inspire future generations.

Mission

The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum is a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of all aspects of the medical heritage of Lancaster County. Formerly known as the Edward Hand Medical Heritage Museum, the associated Foundation was created in 1981 with a mission to preserve and make accessible the rich medical heritage of Lancaster County. In 2020 the Board of Directors formally changed the name to Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum to more accurately reflect the purpose and goals of the organization, which are carried out through its museum and related programs that encourage collection of medical artifacts, interpretation, publications, and education. These activities are historically based, and are designed to serve and benefit students, families, researchers, journalists, and the general public.
