Since 1985 CATRA has offered an opportunity for area residents from all generations with all types of special and typical needs to establish an atmosphere of support, respect, and health in an equestrian farm environment while offering a therapeutic riding experience to those able to benefit from it. Therapeutic riding aids people with any of a wide range of cognitive, physical, and emotional conditions. Family members are encouraged to be participating members of
CATRA's community. Many find that coming
together to participate in an athletic activity rather than focusing on the
'disease' is a welcome respite.
The cornerstone program of CATRA is the Therapeutic Horseback Riding lessons. This program focuses on balance, and movement, while promoting confidence and problem solving. The Miniature Horse Extravaganza - pairs people of all ages with a miniature horse to learn horsemanship, develop confidence, and build social skills while participating in a physical activity. The Paws n' Read Program provides a unique opportunity utilizing the innate curiosity of animals to help young readers improve their reading skills while reading to an animal. The Equine Psychotherapy & Equine Growth & Learning Program -- Horses and humans work together to improve the quality of life and mental health of individuals, families, and groups.
CATRA is a working horse farm which is also home to a number of other therapy animals including goats, cats, rabbits, and chickens.
Volunteers assist with therapeutic riding lessons; feed and care for our therapy animals; provide grounds and garden care; plan events and fundraisers; serve on our board; assist with administrative work, and more.
CATRA provides quality equine and animal-assisted therapeutic programs to the people of the Capital area.
