About the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum
At the Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum (LMHM), we’re dedicated to preserving and sharing Lancaster County’s rich medical history. Through exhibitions, research, and educational programming, we tell the stories of the healers, innovators, and communities that shaped the region’s medical heritage.
With over 11,000 artifacts, our collection spans centuries of medical innovation — from Civil War surgery kits and early dental instruments to X-rays, nursing uniforms, and life-saving devices like the iron lung. Each artifact helps us explore how medicine has evolved — and how it continues to shape the lives of those in our community today.

Mission
The Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum is a charitable non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of all aspects of the medical heritage of Lancaster County. Formerly known as the Edward Hand Medical Heritage Museum, the associated Foundation was created in 1981 with a mission to preserve and make accessible the rich medical heritage of Lancaster County. In 2020 the Board of Directors formally changed the name to Lancaster Medical Heritage Museum to more accurately reflect the purpose and goals of the organization, which are carried out through its museum and related programs that encourage collection of medical artifacts, interpretation, publications, and education. These activities are historically based, and are designed to serve and benefit students, families, researchers, journalists, and the general public.
