Since 1985, CATRA has provided a welcoming environment where people of all ages and abilities—both special and typical—can experience support, respect, and well-being through meaningful interactions with horses. Our equestrian farm setting offers therapeutic riding opportunities that benefit individuals with a wide range of cognitive, physical, and emotional needs.
Families are encouraged to take an active role in the CATRA community, often finding that engaging together in a shared, athletic activity—rather than centering on a diagnosis—brings a sense of relief, connection, and joy.
Therapeutic Horseback Riding lessons
CATRA’s cornerstone program is its Therapeutic Horseback Riding lessons, which help riders build balance, coordination, and confidence while strengthening problem-solving skills.
Miniature Horse Program
The Miniature Horse Program pairs participants of all ages with a miniature horse to learn horsemanship, develop self-assurance, build social skills, and engage in healthy physical activity.
Therapeutic Reading Programs
Paws n’ Read at CATRA
Students of all reading levels are invited to read to CATRA’s dogs, cats, horses, and other farm animals. This safe, non-judgmental environment helps children and teens strengthen their reading skills and build confidence. A variety of books at different reading levels are available, or participants may bring their own. Each session lasts up to 30 minutes and is supervised by CATRA’s Paws n’ Read Coordinator.
Paws n’ Read Mobile Reading Lab
We Come to You! Our mobile therapeutic reading program brings the joy and benefits of Paws n’ Read directly to your location, offering a welcoming space where participants can practice reading aloud to animals in a supportive, encouraging atmosphere.
CATRA operates as a working horse farm and is also home to a variety of therapy animals, including goats, cats, rabbits, and chickens.
Our volunteers play a vital role in every aspect of CATRA’s mission. They assist with therapeutic riding lessons; help feed and care for our animals; support grounds and garden maintenance; plan events and fundraisers; serve on our board; contribute to administrative tasks; and much more.
CATRA provides quality equine and animal-assisted therapeutic programs to the people of the Capital area.
