The Lancaster County Envirothon program and the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School are two unique and valuable education programs hosted by the Lancaster County Conservation District and supported by the Conservation Foundation of Lancaster County, a nonprofit organization with the primary goal of providing education and conservation activities that will create a sustainable future for all citizens of Lancaster County.
The Lancaster County Envirothon program is an academic program that connects students to the outdoors and nature knowledge regarding wildlife, soils, forestry, and water quality involving Lancaster County teachers and students from grades 3-6.
All students in Lancaster County ages 14-16 have the opportunity to participate in the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School. The residential summer field school focuses on outdoor activities and the conservation of our natural resources. Students reside at the school with tents and cots to demonstrate low-impact camping. Topics include stream restoration, forestry, canoeing, wildlife biology and management, survival, and natural resource management. There are many explorations to empower students, ensuring a sustained conservation legacy. Students meet professionals in various conservation-related fields and engage in hands-on career activities. The many benefits of the programs include teamwork, leadership, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning as students continue to tackle and identify environmental challenges in their communities, watersheds, and beyond.
