Hello! I’m Amber, the Visitor Services Manager at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage, a Susquehanna National Heritage Area site. The Zimmerman Center is a gorgeous 1750s stone mansion, with gallery rooms showcasing the art and history of this incredible river and its people.
This is, quite literally, a dream job for me! I get to research and share local history, work with artifacts AND the public AND help with all sorts of exciting programs. Some of my favorites are 4th grade field trips, where we take kids on a hike, on a scavenger hunt in the Zimmerman Center, and down the road to catch little critters for a stream study.
Plus, it comes with the absolute best view :
And that’s only what we do at my location, not to mention across the whole heritage area! Our heritage area includes more than 50 natural and cultural sites, over 100 miles of trails, 10+ scenic overlooks, and so much more to explore. SNHA connects the people and places of Lancaster and York Counties, helping communities celebrate the history, nature, and culture that make this region unique.
At the historic Mifflin Farm, we’re preserving an important stop on the Underground Railroad, and we’re developing a world-class history center and art museum to tell the amazing stories of this region and its people. At Zimmerman, in addition to what I've already mentioned, we also have the historic Chief Uncas, where we welcome visitors to experience River Discovery boat tours. At Columbia Crossing, we help people explore the shoreline and river towns on the Susquehanna.
